It probable went unnoticed, but I failed to post a January mixtape. Somewhere between the holidays, a visitor in Madrid and a lack of inspiration, I couldn't get a good, cohesive playlist together. I started many drafts on Spotify, but never finished any worthy of posting.

So this month, instead of skipping out once again, I asked my friend Alanna to share some music. I've spoken about Alanna before. She's become a good friend in Madrid through a shared love of soccer, good music and weekday cocktail outings.

Alanna is also one of those people who has completely fallen in love with Madrid and immersed herself in the Spanish culture. So it's always interesting to me when she talks about missing aspects of her life back in Brooklyn.

Here is what she said about her inspiration for this wintery playlist:

“I escaped winter this year. Although I am glad to have avoided the endless storms and sky-high snow banks flanking the streets of New York, I have nonetheless experienced a certain amount of seasonal nostalgia. I remember the glow of a setting winter sun as it sinks into a peppermint sky, the stillness of an evening snowfall when you can't tell whether the flakes are flying up or down or just swirling around in infinite space....”

Well, Thanksgiving is over, the Madrid streets are twinkling with colorful lights, and my advent calendar is already missing quite a few chocolates. We have made it to December and Christmas is well on its way, so it is about time I post this month's playlist with an obvious theme.

Most of these songs are remade holiday classics and a few are originals that are perfect for frolicking in the snow. There is an overall folkish theme that just makes you want to curl up next to the fire with some warm apple cider.

The unavoidable toe tapping and head bobbing. The bass riffs pulsating in your chest. The sing alongs, the encores, the combined energy from a crowd.

Is this what makes live music so great? I really don’t know, but I’m addicted. My last show was Tame Impala in June and I’ve been hoping to see something good since I arrived in Spain at the beginning of August.

Although Madrid is known to not have much of a music scene, it gets some good musicians passing through on their European tours. Last night, I was lucky enough to catch Local Natives at Joy Eslava.

The venue is small and was pretty perfect for a mellow show like this one. My two friends and I decided to avoid throwing elbows, so we went up a tier and scored a spot front and center.

I saw these guys in 2010 at Bonnaroo, but I wasn't too familiar with them at the time. Now, with the release of their album Hummingbird earlier this year, I've been listening quite a bit. But of course seeing the band live is definitely better than listening through my computer speakers as I fold laundry.

Three of the five guys share vocals as well as switch responsibilities on stage between guitars, percussions and keyboard. It's a fun show to watch and bassist Andy Hamm has pretty entertaining dance moves.

They ended the show with a Fleet Fox-y (according to my friend Alanna) acoustic version of "Who Knows Who Cares" before returning for the encore with "Sun Hands" - their most up-beat sing-along, perfect to end all shows as a crowd pleaser.

And as if Local Natives didn't provide enough live music for the night, I stopped by my friend Michael's flat for a few post-show glasses of wine.

He's in the works of putting together an acoustic musical group with a couple friends. We were lucky enough to be treated to a small, private show on the terrace.

Saint Rich
Ten days into November and I have yet to post this month's playlist. There's some great new music out right now and I have been listening to quite an eclectic mix, so it was hard to put together a playlist with songs that complimented one another.

I recently discovered that my fellow pick-up soccer addict, Alanna, has an amazing taste in music and she has turned me on to some good bands like Delicate Steve (Steve Marion) and his side project Saint Rich.

So this mix includes the soulful sounds of Saint Rich and also some garage band blues from White Denim's new album, Corsicana Lemonade. I also can't get enough of Allah-Las with their reverb-ridden psychedelic surf rock similar to the sounds of Brian Jonestown Massacre. Oh, and I cannot not mention Wild Belle - a little bit of jazz with some elements of disco and a smoky soulful voice. Simply amazing.

Listen to this mix when you feel the need to chill out with some slightly upbeat music. And if you like it, also check out August's Psychedelic Summer Mixtape.

Boone, NC in October 2008
This past month, as my Instagram feed filled with pictures of pumpkin spice everything, I was still sweating in my apartment in Madrid.

Without air-conditioning, my fan was constantly blasting. No leaves were falling outside my window. And while I was dreamt of boots and sweaters, my denim cut-offs were still a regular favorite.

All I could do to pretend autumn had arrived was read this and listen to some slower, pleasant fall-ish music while I overheated in the underground metro.

This playlist is definitely easier listening than the August or September mixes. It's comfort food music that should be enjoyed while walking in the crisp air with leaves crunching under your feet.

It starts out with a little taste from Dr. Dog's newly released album: 'B-Room.' I thought that I had maybe outgrown the band, but while 'B-Room' is definitely the same old Dr. Dog, it reflects a wide range of genres and you can find something suitable for whatever mood you're in.

Actually, a lot of this mix is nostalgic for me with many artists that I haven't been listening to since I was back at college in the Blue Ridge Mountains (Dr. Dog, Langhorne Slim, The Black Keys, Trey Anastasio/Phish, Jenny Lewis), but right now it brings comfort to a foreign place and it just feels right.

1. Dr. Dog – Too Weak to Ramble; 2. The National - I Should Live in Salt; 3. Futurebirds – Strangers; 4. The Black Keys – Dearest; 5. Jenny Lewis – Sing A Song For Them; 6. Sparklehorse – Return To Me; 7. Goldfrapp – Stranger; 8. The Bombay Bicycle Club – Fairy Tale Lullaby; 9. Middle Brother – Daydreaming; 10. Delta Spirit – People, Turn Around; 11. Langhorne Slim – Coffee Cups; 12. Fruit Bats – Tony the Tripper; 13. Trey Anastasio – Let Me Lie

And now that I am posting this, the Fall (or Otoño) has arrived. A few days ago, the rain came and washed away any signs of summer that were still present.

Although I do not expect an influx of Pumpkin Spice Lattes here in Spain, I am ready for the sweaters and crisp air accompanied by some good music.

La Costa Brava: Zaragoza, Spain
When I first moved to Ecuador in September of 2011, my Spanish was almost non-existent. I knew some basic phrases, colors, numbers, "Donde esta el baño?" but not much more.

I really wanted to learn, but I wasn't willing to pay for lessons when I was already immersed in the language: through the people that worked in the shops, my boss, my friends, and the music.

Everyday, whether is was thumping from the worker boys' cabaña on the farm or playing from radios at every restaurant in town, I heard reggaeton: an awful mixture of Latino pop and hip hop. Terrible music, but it was addicting.

I wanted to sing the words like everyone else and know the meaning of these songs, so I got mp3s passed on from the flashdrives of friends and I downloaded from youtube. I looked up the lyrics online, printed them out, and translated them to English.

I listened to the music while making my four kilometer walk to the bus stop. I learned it made a great running mix and I also danced to the same songs at the beach cabañas almost every weekend. I was memorizing the lyrics while learning new words and phrases. I was learning a new language through pretty crappy music, but it worked.

Since leaving Ecuador, returning back to The States and moving to Spain, I have known that I've wanted to continue learning the language through music, but this time, some better music.

It has taken me almost a year, but I have found a solid groundwork of Spanish-speaking artists that I enjoy. It all started with stumbling across Devendra Banhart's weird freak-folk music video for Carmensita with lyrics like "Me como tu amor y cago el infierno."

So check out the September 2013 playlist on Spotify:

When I travel, I find my taste in music changing drastically and adapting to whatever environment I find myself in (Ecuador: salsa, bachata, reggaeton; New Zealand: electro-pop, synth; Boone: jam bands, folk; etc.).

In an attempt to personally document my different moods and broad appreciation of music, I plan to share a Spotify playlist of 15 songs from whatever I am listening to each month.

During July and over the past few months, I have become obsessed with new psychedelic, alternative sounds. I think my inspiration stemmed from a friend's recommendation of Tame Impala a few years ago and my growing obsession with the band. I recently saw them live at The National in Richmond (with @Aimee__DUH) and it was such a great show that it has dictated the rest of my summer listening.

Most of this playlist has a fluid, psychedelic sound with strong echoes and a lot of falsetto. I'm also enjoying some hints of surf-rock that make this mix really feel like summertime, windows down, sun shining...

Although my plane leaves in two days, I am not even slightly prepared. I can’t even say that I’m mentally prepared because my mind cannot seem to weigh any feelings of excitement/nervousness/readiness/fear. I’m hoping it will hit me all at once in the airport.

While it will be okay to mentally prepare myself at the last minute, I should probably work on my physical preparation (i.e. packing) pretty soon. I recently purchased a set of luggage that my mom describes as being put in the store just for me to buy it. It’s true, these lime green, rugged, High Sierra pieces just scream my name. Along with luggage, I also bought an R.E.I Ventruri Backpack to use as my carry-on as well as on weekend trips and tramping. I’m hoping they will contend with my tendencies to over-pack.

The only thing that I have successfully packed is my iTunes. I’m satisfied that my updated playlist with keep me entertained with new material during my 20+ hour trip. I’ve also picked through my music to create a “Travel” playlist with songs to get me in the mood to [for lack of a better word] GO!

Here are my Top 15 Travel Songs:

 1. Ramble On – Led Zeppelin

I may not be “goin’ round the world to find my girl” but the song represents a sense of freedom, spontaneity oh and, rock and roll.

 2. New World Man – Rush

After following some friend's obsession with 'Tom Sawyer,' I have grown to love Rush's greatest hits. This is such a perfect song for being young and traveling while choosing to make mistakes and to learn from them.

 3. Don’t Stay Home – 311

311 will always represent summertime in Manassas and while the song reminds me of home, it encourages you to never say no and sit at home when the world is waiting.

4. The Adventure – Angels & Airwaves

"Here I am and here we go, life’s waiting to begin."

5. Taste – Animal Collective

Animal Collective is one of my more recent obsessions. This song on their newest album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, deals with someone still remaining to be themselves without having everything (music, posessions, clothes) that make them who they are.

6. The Long and Winding Road - The Beatles

This is such a typical travel song, but it's The Beatles and it's about being on the road, so it's perfect.

7. Time Turns Elastic – Phish

This is a new piece from Phish that moves through segments exploring each part of the world and nature while being out on his own.

8. The World at Large – Modest Mouse

The song is about drifting and getting to a new, unfamiliar place. “If the world’s at large, why should I remain?”

 9. My Love Goes With You – Mishka

I learned of Mishka after writing an album review for The Appalachian. This peaceful, reggae song from 'Above the Bones' encourages you to find love, truth and free time for yourself within everything you do, wherever you are.

10. Road Trippin – Red Hot Chili Peppers

This is such a cliche travel song, but I definitely needed some Chili Peppers in the mix. And there is nothing wrong with wanting to "go get lost."

 11. Godspeed – Jenny Lewis

While the girl in this song is encouraged to leave because of the abuse she is receiving, I still just love the encouragement to keep going but to “keep the lighthouse in sight.”

 12. Such Great Heights – Iron & Wine

This song is a cover of The Postal Service, but Iron & Wine’s version kicks its ass. No one can tell you to quit your adventure when you want to keep going: “They will see us waving from such great heights ‘Come down now,’ they'll say. But everything looks perfect from far away…”

13. Movin’ On Down the Line – The Black Crowes

This song is about keepin' on while letting go and moving on.

14. Wagon Wheel – Old Crow Medicine Show

This song travels up and down the east coast and just reminds of North Carolina.

15. How Bizarre - OMC

This hilarious 90's hit is by OMC, a one-hit-wonder Maori group from Auckland, New Zealand. So, it was obviously necessary to include this in the list.
